ARTIST'S PHILOSOPHY:
Historical Reference is one of my favourite inspirations. While history might underpin the concept of a piece, the artistic elements are what drive the design. The Egyptian influence in Art Deco is the inspiration for the Nile Ring, (18K yellow gold with coral). Movement within the piece is created by flowing lines and repeated oval shapes. Space is as important as shape in the piece – particularly interior space that allows light to enter. Texture is applied on the inside surfaces to heighten the play of light. The oval shape of the inside ring allows it to slip sideways over a large knuckle and rotate back upwards to hug the sides of the finger.
My mentors are the mid 19th Century Master Jewelers who created precious artworks: Lalique's enamel colour play with transluscent glass and opal; Vever's fluid art nouveau line; Tiffany's juxtaposition of enamel and gemstones in memorable design motifs; the rich enamel colours and painted portraits of Falize, and the diamond set, framed enamels and sculptural components of Fontenay; Bulgari's colour impact with cabochon emeralds and rubies; and Cartier's precision design and craftsmanship.
